Funds are dedicated to scholarship recipients and not used for any other expenses (except as listed below). Donations can be ongoing or a one-time contribution.

Any funds remaining in a given year after fees and dues subtracted for scholarship recipients will be used to offset fees charged by the Hombu in Japan for individual students. Fees charged to students by the Hombu include application fees, registration fees, and contribution fees.

All Shunpookan Aikido USA dojo members are eligible.

We keep our costs as low as possible and this program helps us do that. 

All recipients are vetted through state / local charitable organizations that validate need and eligibility.

Robert "McCallum" Combs Scholarship

The Robert "McCallum" Combs Scholarship is dedicated to honoring the memory of Robert Combs, a longstanding and highly valued member of the Shunpookan Aikido community. This scholarship provides financial support for one year's dues and fees, including course fees, for up to two Shunpookan Aikido members each year. It is designed to assist students who are dedicated to training and participating in club activities but are experiencing financial difficulties.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to all members of Shunpookan Aikido who have trained with the club for at least two months.

  • Applicants must demonstrate financial need, which will be validated through a local non-profit organization.

  • The final decision on eligibility will be made by the local dojo-cho or class leader.

 

About Robert "McCallum" Combs: Robert Combs joined Shunpookan Aikido in 2013 and was known for his unwavering dedication and spirit of service. As a prior service member of the US military, he maintained his readiness through regular training and was deeply committed to helping others. Robert was actively involved in youth and religious groups, teaching himself new skills to support those he believed in. Despite facing numerous personal challenges, including serious medical conditions and supporting his life partner through a prolonged injury, Robert remained a steadfast and reliable member of the Shunpookan Aikido community.

In the later years of his life, Robert took on a leadership role within Shunpookan Aikido, utilizing his rich set of skills and talents to help the club grow. The Robert "McCallum" Combs Scholarship recognizes his core values of dedication, resilience, and selfless service to others.

This scholarship embodies Robert's spirit and aims to support those who share his commitment to Shunpookan Aikido and its community.
