Daniel Gilbert Sensei started his Aikido training in 1998 in Bridgnorth UK under Paul Evans Sensei, and Brian Burrows Shihan. Gilbert Sensei started teaching in Gastonia NC when he moved there from the UK in 2005.
Shunpookan NC focuses on traditional, effective Aikido. We follow a traditional syllabus, while constantly testing our techniques to ensure that they work in a self-defense situation. The syllabus builds the foundation and the self defense mindset and approach makes the techniques effective.
Gilbert Sensei has studied various martial arts since 1976 including karate, jujitsu, vita saana, and thai kick-boxing among others.
CLASSES AND COURSES
Practical and Traditional
Traditional Hombu-based syllabus training. Working through a solid understanding of Aikido fundamentals and formal rank progression.
We complement the traditional syllabus with effective self defense applications of the key fundamentals. This is the "Fire" element contained within Aikido.
We focus on the main three weapons, the tanto, the bokken and the jo. In addition we study how techniques can translate to other art's weapons such as the bo, the han-bo, escrima sticks, and others.
Sensei Gilbert has been teaching Aikido in the US since 2005 after moving here from the UK. SPK NC is the only traditional Aikido school in Gaston County. We welcome students of all backgrounds and experience.

Instructors from the Shunpookan system have started schools in York South Carolina and Tulsa Oklahoma. All our US based schools maintain a strong link to the United Kingdom and the head of the Shunpookan system, Shihan Brian Burrows.
